Month by month
Mahale Mountains in April
April sits in the middle of the closure, drier on paper than March but no more open to visitors. This page explains the gap between the rainfall figure and the calendar.
If you only want the answer
Mahale stays closed throughout April. Rainfall drops from March's total, but no camp reopens early on the strength of a lighter month, so treat April exactly like a closed month, not a nearly-open one.
April weather: lighter rain, same closed gate
April brings 293 mm of rain over 23 days, noticeably less than March's 383 mm over 29, and it would be reasonable to assume the park eases back open as the numbers improve. It does not. Every camp that closed on 1 March stays closed through all of April, and the reopening date is fixed at 1 June regardless of how the month's weather behaves.
The reason is logistics, not just rainfall totals. Trails need real time to firm up after two soaked months, boat crews and camp staff work to their own seasonal schedule, and Safari Air Link does not restart its western circuit until June. A drier April on the ground does not move any of those dates.
What the forest is doing without you
This is peak green season on the mountain itself: Mount Nkungwe's slopes are at their fullest, and the gallery forest along the eventual trek routes is thick with new growth. None of it is accessible, since the same closure that shuts the camps also shuts the ranger-led hikes and boat trips that would normally get you there.
A month that looks like February on paper
Read the numbers side by side and April looks a lot like February: the same 24.2°C day high and 18.1°C night low sit on both months' records. The difference is entirely about the calendar rather than the climate. February is open and cheap; April is shut regardless of how familiar the thermometer looks.
The multi-day push to Mount Nkungwe's summit is also off the table in April, along with every other ranger-led hike. Trail conditions two months into the rains are simply not safe for a multi-day route, whatever the daily forecast happens to say.
Reserve now for the reopening
If Greystoke is your target camp, April is the month to secure it, not to watch the weather. Its six bandas hold only twelve guests at a time, and the early-June dates that carry February-level pricing are exactly the ones that fill first once bookings open.
