Month by month
Mahale Mountains in May
May is the strangest month on this page: the rain has almost stopped, yet the entire park stays shut until the calendar, not the weather, says otherwise.
If you only want the answer
May's own weather looks close to dry season, with rainfall dropping to a fraction of March and April's totals, but every camp remains closed until 1 June regardless. Do not read the improving forecast as an invitation.
May weather: the rain has mostly stopped, the gate has not opened
May's 36 mm of rain over just 6 days is a dramatic drop from April's 293 mm over 23, and on the climate data alone this looks like the start of the dry season proper. The camps disagree: Greystoke and Mbali Mbali Mahale both hold their closure through 31 May, reopening only on 1 June, and nothing about a dry May changes that fixed date.
Treat this page's own verdict for the month, shoulder rather than closed, as a description of the weather, not an offer. The infrastructure that makes a Mahale trip possible, flights, boat transfers, staffed camps, stays switched off for the whole month.
What is quietly getting ready
Behind the closed gates, this is when trails dry out enough to be walkable again and camp teams prepare for the reopening. The M group has spent the wet months ranging high through abundant fruit, and by late May they are likely working their way back down toward the lower forest that makes June's treks so much easier.
The one price that never moves
When the park does reopen, one figure will not have changed regardless of the season: the $80 daily conservation fee, plus 18 percent VAT, holds flat year-round, with no peak or low split. Only the lodge rates move with the calendar, so a May spent watching camp prices for June tells you nothing about the government side of the bill.
Waterfalls along the eventual trek routes are still running hard in May even as the rain itself tapers off, since the forest floor takes weeks to drain after a wet season this heavy. None of it is walkable yet, but it explains why June's early treks pass so much moving water.
Do not let the forecast fool you
Confirm your early-June booking now rather than waiting to see how May behaves. Camps do not move their 1 June reopening forward even in a dry year, so a trip planned around good May weather will still find every door shut.
