Month by month
Mahale Mountains in June
June is reopening month and the best value week of the year in one package: the camps that spent three months closed come back with rates that will not last.
If you only want the answer
June is the value pick of the Mahale calendar. The forest is still lush from the rains, the chimps are descending toward the lower slopes, and Greystoke's early-June rate matches its lowest price of the year before shoulder pricing takes over.
June weather: the reopening, and what it actually feels like
Camps reopen on 1 June and scheduled flights resume the same day, ending three months with no functioning route into the park. June itself brings just 1 mm of rain, effectively none, and the coolest nights of the year at 16.5°C, so pack more warmth for the evenings than the daytime heat suggests.
The forest still carries its wet-season lushness even as the ground dries underfoot, and the M group is on its way down the mountain rather than fully settled into dry-season low feeding. Treks in early June sit somewhere between April's long climb and August's short stroll from the beach.
The pricing window that closes fast
Early June holds Greystoke's cheapest rate of the year, matching February's low season, before the property's shoulder pricing takes over later in the month. That reopening stretch is the single best value window at Mahale's top camp, and it is exactly when the twelve-guest property fills first.
The lake settles fast once the rain stops. Boat transfers run calm and on schedule, and this is the first month all year where you can plan a dhow sundowner without a real chance of it being cancelled for weather.
The water activities come back online together
With the lake calm again, every water-based option returns at the same time as the camps themselves. Kayaking and snorkelling both run at $10 for up to three hours, and a full day of sport fishing for Nile perch and tigerfish costs $25, with rod hire at $20 if you have not brought your own gear.
June is also a sensible month to ask about the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience if a single hour with the M group will not be enough for you. At $100 per person on top of the conservation fee, it is not offered by every camp, so raise it when you book rather than when you arrive.
Move fast on early June
Book the first two weeks of June specifically if the rate matters to you, since Greystoke's pricing steps up before the month is out and demand for the reopening period is real even at a park this quiet.
