Month by month
Mahale Mountains in November
November is when the short rains arrive properly, the migratory birds land with them, and the flight schedule quietly switches from timetable to request.
If you only want the answer
November suits birders and returning visitors more than first-time trekkers. The rain jumps sharply from October, the chimps start moving back uphill, and flights run on request only from here through February, so confirm your seat rather than assuming a schedule.
November weather: the short rains, on schedule
November's average of 376 mm over 26 rain days is a dramatic step up from October's 110 mm over 14, and it marks a genuine change in the park's rhythm rather than a gradual drift. Day temperatures actually cool a little, to 23.4°C, as cloud cover thickens through the month.
The M group starts working its way back up the mountain as new fruit comes into season, and treks lengthen accordingly. It is not yet the long climb of the deep wet season, but it is a clear step away from October's easy walks.
Birds arrive as the flight schedule tightens
This is the start of the migratory bird window that runs through to April, and forest birders who time a visit for November get a genuinely different checklist from the dry-season crowd. It comes with a trade-off: Safari Air Link's scheduled western circuit ends on 31 October, and from 1 November its Mahale flights operate on request only through the end of February.
All the main camps stay open through November, and the lake, while noticeably rougher than September's calm water, still supports boat transfers and swimming on all but the stormiest afternoons.
Planning November and December together
If December is also on your itinerary, treat November as the month to lock both legs of the trip at once. The camps that stay open into the short rains are the same ones that will later add a festive supplement in December, and confirming your dates early avoids finding a favourite camp already full for either month.
Sport fishing and kayaking remain available through November on the same terms as the rest of the year, $25 and $10 respectively, though a squally afternoon can shorten a session that would run its full length in the dry months.
Confirm your flight yourself
Confirm your flight booking directly with the camp or operator rather than trusting an online timetable, since November is the first month of the on-request period and a seat that looks scheduled online may not actually be.
