Month by month
Mahale Mountains in March
March is the wettest month that is not December, and the first of three months when this page has nothing to sell you: the park is closed.
If you only want the answer
You cannot visit Mahale in March. Every camp is shut, scheduled flights are paused, and the park is effectively off-limits to tourism until June.
March weather: why nothing is bookable
March averages 383 mm of rain across 29 days, the second-wettest month on the record after December, and it is the month every camp on this shore uses to shut its doors. Greystoke and Mbali Mbali Mahale both close from 1 March, and the independent Nkungwe Beach Lodge sits outside its own stated dry-season window for the same three months.
The closure is not a marketing choice. Scheduled flights pause entirely, the forest trails that carry you to the chimps turn to running mud, and Lake Tanganyika's afternoon storms make a small-boat transfer a genuine risk rather than an inconvenience.
What is actually happening on the mountain
The M group is somewhere up in the forest, following fruit that March's rain keeps abundant, and the research programme that has tracked them since 1968 continues regardless of visitor traffic. You are simply not part of it this month. The lake is at its roughest, the waterfalls the forest hikes normally reach are running at their hardest, and none of it sits inside a normal visitor itinerary.
What a March enquiry actually gets you
Call any camp about a March date and you will hear the same answer: closed. Greystoke and Mbali Mbali do not take a smaller booking or an exception for a determined traveller, and the TANAPA reservation system will not issue a control number for a trek that has nowhere to sleep and no flight to reach it.
The research programme itself does not pause. Field staff continue tracking the M group through the wettest weeks of the year, which is one reason the habituated chimps stay so reliably findable once the camps reopen in June: the community has never actually gone unmonitored.
Book June, not March
Use March to lock in a June date rather than to plan a March trip. The camps that reopen on 1 June set their opening rates now, and the early-June weeks carry pricing close to February's low season, before demand builds through July and August.
