The Katavi circuit, then the dhow
Flying to Mahale: the shared charter circuit, verified 2026
There is one scheduled airline to Mahale, it flies twice a week, and it does not touch Arusha. Everything else you may have read about getting here is either a camp-arranged charter dressed up as a schedule, or a ferry that has not sailed to a fixed timetable in over two years. Here is what we could verify against Safari Air Link's own 2026-2027 rate sheet, checked 14 September 2026, plus the honest state of the Kigoma alternative.
If you only want the answer
Almost every guest reaches Mahale on Safari Air Link's Monday and Thursday western circuit, flying in from Ruaha or Katavi, then finishing on a boat along Lake Tanganyika that every camp arranges and no aircraft skips. There is no scheduled flight from Arusha at all, whatever most guide sites imply; you route via Ruaha, Katavi or Dar es Salaam instead. Rack fares checked against Safari Air Link's 2026-2027 sheet: $775 plus $10 tax from Ruaha, $510 plus $10 tax from Katavi on a minimum of four passengers. Mahale is Africa's most committing chimpanzee park to reach, and the two-stage arrival, plane then dhow, is not a chore before the trip. It is the trip starting early.
The two-stage arrival, and why nobody skips stage two
Every route into Mahale ends the same way. Stage one is a light aircraft to the Mahale airstrip, which sits on the lakeshore but not at any camp. Stage two is a boat along Lake Tanganyika, roughly one to two hours depending on which beach you are headed to. Every reputable camp arranges and includes this transfer; you cannot organise it yourself on arrival at the strip. Greystoke Mahale runs its version as a traditional wooden dhow with a drink handed to you before the engine even starts, which is as good an introduction to this park as exists anywhere in Africa.
The boat runs in reverse on departure day too, so build it into any onward connection rather than treating it as a formality. TANAPA requires lifejackets and compliance with the skipper, and Lake Tanganyika's wind can rise fast enough to delay a crossing. Do not book a same-day international flight straight off the back of a Mahale departure.
The Monday and Thursday circuit, checked against the airline's own 2026-2027 sheet
One airline flies scheduled service to Mahale: Safari Air Link, on its western circuit, Mondays and Thursdays only. We pulled the airline's own Timetable & Rates 2026-2027 document, covering flights from 1 June 2026 to 31 March 2027, and it confirms the pattern most guides get right and the details most get wrong. The circuit runs Ruaha to Katavi to Mahale in the morning, 07:00 departure from Ruaha, then straight back from Mahale by early afternoon. That timing quietly dictates every Mahale itinerary: stays run Monday to Thursday, Thursday to Monday, or a full week, because there is no other day to fly in or out on schedule.
The fine print matters here. The standard schedule operates 1 June to 31 October; from 1 November to 28 February the same route runs on request rather than as a fixed departure, so confirm before you build a shoulder-season trip around it. The entire Safari Air Link network, including this circuit, is suspended from 31 March to 1 June, which is the one stretch of the year when flying to Mahale at all stops being an option.
From Arusha there is no scheduled flight to Mahale, full stop. We read every route table in the 2026-2027 sheet and Arusha does not appear as an origin or destination anywhere in it. Any itinerary you see quoting a direct Arusha to Mahale flight is describing a private charter, not a scheduled seat. The independent camp Nkungwe Beach Lodge arranges its own charters from Arusha on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which is a real and useful option, but it is the camp's charter, not an airline schedule, and it is priced and booked through the lodge rather than at a public fare.
Dar es Salaam is real, but only in the direction most people do not expect. Safari Air Link sells a scheduled seat from Mahale to Dar es Salaam on the Monday and Thursday circuit, departing 09:50 and landing 16:45. There is no matching same-day seat the other way: the daily flight from Dar reaches Ruaha only around midday, well after the 07:00 departure of the Monday or Thursday western leg, so a Dar-origin traveller needs an overnight stop in Ruaha before joining the circuit into Mahale, or a private charter to skip it.
A second correction worth stating plainly, because it repeats across older guide sites: Auric Air's current published schedule, which we cross-checked against the same Safari Air Link sheet where the two airlines share Ruaha to Seronera connector flights, contains no route to Mahale, Katavi or Kigoma. Wherever you see Auric Air listed for this park, it is out of date.

Rack rates verified against Safari Air Link's own Timetable & Rates 2026-2027 document, checked 14 September 2026. The listed tax is the airline's own indicative departure charge; its terms separately note an aviation safety fee, currently $5 per person on domestic flights, invoiced on top and excluded from the advertised rate, so carry a little more than the table shows.
The baggage rule that catches people
- 23 kg per passenger total, including hand luggage.
- Soft bags only, wheeled duffels are fine but no hard-shell or rigid suitcases.
- Bags must fit a 77.5 x 37 cm luggage pod.
- Excess luggage costs $5 per kilo, subject to space, and must be pre-booked, not negotiated at the airstrip.
- Photographic gear that needs extra room is quoted and arranged the same way, well before departure.
Kigoma: the scheduled flight almost nobody mentions, plus the boat that finishes the job
There is a second, slower way in: fly or travel overland to Kigoma, then arrange a boat south. Precision Air, whose network older guide sites still list for Kigoma, does not serve the airport at all as of our check on 14 September 2026; its published destinations run Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Kahama, Mtwara, Mwanza, Zanzibar and Nairobi, with Kigoma appearing nowhere among them, live or suspended. The airline that actually flies there is Air Tanzania, which restarted Kigoma service in January 2013 and still lists Dar es Salaam to Kigoma among its current routes. We could not confirm the current weekly frequency or fare directly from Air Tanzania's own booking channels; confirm both with the airline or a travel agent before you plan around it.
Kigoma sits roughly 130 km north of the park by water, and nothing about the final leg is scheduled or fixed-price: the whole chain, town logistics, the boat charter, and the on-again MV Liemba, is covered in full on our Kigoma page, because it deserves more than a paragraph here.
The MV Liemba: a cautious update, still not a plan
The MV Liemba, the 1913 German-built steamer that historically sailed weekly from Kigoma down the lake, is the most romantic route to Mahale and the one most guidebooks still describe as running. As of our check on 14 September 2026 we cannot confirm that either way with certainty. The vessel has been under major restoration since 2024, and the operator's own transport authority previously targeted a September 2026 return to service. A community-maintained travel wiki logged an edit on 25 August 2026 suggesting sailings had resumed, but we could not reach the operator, Marine Services Company Limited in Kigoma, to confirm a current schedule or fare from an official source.
Treat that as promising, not proven. Verify directly with Marine Services Company Limited before it goes anywhere near your itinerary. When it last ran to a fixed pattern, disembarkation for Mahale was at Lagosa, roughly ten hours from Kigoma, by tender boat offshore and then a local boat onward, with historic fares of about $30 to $40 one way depending on class. Miss the sailing and the next one could be up to two weeks away, which is exactly why nobody should build a fixed itinerary around it yet.
The honest verdict: worth the trouble, on its own terms
No other major chimpanzee destination in Africa asks this much of you to arrive. There is no road option at all, the only scheduled airline flies twice a week, and the budget route through Kigoma involves a ferry with an uncertain schedule and a private boat charter that nobody publishes a fare for. If you need the trip to be simple, Mahale is not that trip.
What you get in exchange is an arrival almost nobody else on the safari circuit has: a light aircraft over rainforest and lake, then a wooden dhow along a shoreline with no roads touching it anywhere, ending on a beach where the only way out is the way you came in. Budget the Monday or Thursday circuit into your dates from the start, confirm your baggage is in soft bags, and treat the flight and the boat as the first game drive of the trip rather than the transport to get to one.
Something this page does not answer?
Schedules here are thin and change by season. If the dates you want are not covered, ask.
Ask us. We answer questions about the park itself, and we can usually tell you which camps work on one route and who to write to. If what you want is a trip someone else arranges, we will say so and hand you to an operator we know, and we earn a commission if that becomes a booking.
Nothing on this site sits behind the form. Every figure we have is already on the page.
